How does the FD Calculator work?
A Fixed Deposit (FD) is a one-time deposit that earns interest at a fixed rate over a fixed tenure. This calculator supports both ways banks compute FD interest — pick the one your bank offers above:
- Simple Interest FD — interest is earned only on the principal, every year: M = P + (P × r × t / 100). For example, ₹1,00,000 for 5 years at 10% gives M = 1,00,000 + (1,00,000 × 10 × 5 / 100) = ₹1,50,000.
- Compound Interest FD — interest is reinvested every quarter and itself earns interest, the way Indian banks actually compound FDs: M = P × (1 + r/(100 × 4))4t. For example, ₹1,00,000 for 1 year at 10% gives M = 1,00,000 × (1 + 10/400)4 = ₹1,10,381. For the same 5-year, 10% numbers as above, M = 1,00,000 × (1 + 10/400)20 = ₹1,63,862.
Where P is the principal amount, r is the annual interest rate (%), and t is the tenure in years. Compound interest is compounded quarterly (4 times a year), matching standard bank FD terms.
